done. Rather than fish the main lake, Dave decided to go for large-
mouth in the bay since he had been on some nice ones a few days
ago. It was a little sketchy whether we would get a decent bass for
photos, but when Dave found the exact corner in an offshore weed-
bed, he immediately had several hits on his jig, landing one nice pho-
to fish. Next week when he returns from his tournament travels, we
will hit the Big Lake for smallies.”

Lake Erie
Jeff @ Poor Richards; filed 7-25: “Perch fishing on the West Side remains spotty with
most fish being caught in 52 to 55 feet of water. Walleye fishing is okay with a few fish
still biting in shallower water, but anglers are doing best down 45 feet over 70 to 75 feet
in the Trenches. Both worm harnesses and plugs are working. The junk fish are not too
bad in the depths where walleyes are being caught.”

Dan @ Elk Creek Sports; filed 7-25: “We are finally seeing those western schools of wall-
eye moving into Pennsylvania waters…really not late, pretty much on time. Some guys
running out of Conneaut Harbor are turning east into PA waters because the fishing is
better from Elk Creek to the Ohio line. Perch have also picked up…that bite has been be-
hind. Anglers are getting limit catches within 3 to 4 hours. One of my customers told me
that he was getting 72 degrees from the surface to the bottom in 45 feet of water – no
thermocline showing up. But at 55 feet there was a thermocline. Not sure what to make
of that. But I can tell you that fishing is picking up dramatically in the last week! Now if
we can get some reasonably calm seas!”

Rich Weber @ Erie Sports Store; filed 7-25: “Attached is a picture of
Jim Rzomp with a 14 inch perch caught Sunday, 7-24. After a small
storm passed over Lake Erie on Sunday evening, the perch bite was
strong in 54’ of water west of Walnut Creek. The four of us caught
our limit. As has been the case for the past several weeks, the perch
bite is mixed. The persistent anglers seem to be able to do OK with
some limits, but overall the perch fishing is still spotty. Most anglers
are fishing in 48 to 55 feet anywhere from Shades Beach to Elk Creek.
There have been limits caught off Shades in 52 feet, off The Point and off the Lighthouse
in 48 to 52 feet, as well as off Walnut in same depth. Walleye fishing has been OK in the
50-foot range and out deeper in 70 to 80 feet. Bay Rat Lures, Reef Runners and Bagley’s
have worked well for the trollers. Some success has been with leadcore running 5 to 7
colors with shallow lip plugs.” (See Livewell photo of total perch catch. )
