VENANGO COUNTY

Allegheny River
Jason Hagg; filed 7-24: “We’ve been smallmouth fishing the river from north of Franklin to
south of Franklin. I’ve been throwing Zoom Flukes, tubes and cranks. The bite has been
steady on the 10 to 12 inch bass, but bigger fish have not shown themselves.”

Pete Cartwright @ SmalliesontheYough.com; filed 7-24: “We
fished the Allegheny on July 22 and 23. We had a tough time in the
heat. But the bite was good early morning and late evening. We
landed a few nice bass on soft plastics including 412ubes from 412
Bait Company.” (See photos on right)

Angler Al’s Summer Live Bait Tip

The dog days of summer arrived early this summer. And the long
range forecast indicates the heat will remain through September.
This can be bad news for walleye fishermen. During summer
heat, I usually have my best success on Pymatuning and Wilhelm
by slow trolling (1-2 mph) a crawler harness. I troll harnesses be-
tween 75 and 100 feet behind the boat, using 1/8-ounce barrel
sinker for 8 to 12 feet of water, or a 1/4-ounce sinker for 12 to 16
feet of water. However in this heat, it doesn’t take long for crawl-
ers to spoil, so it is extremely important to keep crawlers fresh. A
Styrofoam container works best, since it will breathe whereas a
plastic container stores warmth. Keep the container on ice to ex-
tend the life of your crawlers. Also, as a First Aid and Safety in-
structor, I need to remind everyone to hydrate, hydrate and hydrate when outdoors. Drink
lots of water or other fluids to replenish your electrolyte level. Keep your fluids on ice with
the crawlers! – Angler Al
