Mercer and Venango counties?”

FRENCH CREEK – Flowing through all four counties

If you were fishing or kayaking on French Creek in the Cochranton area
on July 23 or 24, you may have encountered someone whose dress and
regalia seemed a bit out of place, making you feel like you had crossed a
time rift. No, the heat wasn’t making you see things. During colonial

times, French Creek was a conduit for travel in NW
PA. In 1753, a young George Washington on behalf of the Governor of
Virginia traveled via the Allegheny River and French Creek to the
French Fort LeBoeuf at present day Waterford to deliver a letter to the
garrison commander stating the French were on lands claimed by the
colony of Virginia. This past weekend, reenactors representing frontier

Mark Posego (Franklin):
   - 7-23: “I wade fished the Sugarcreek Area of French Creek Saturday morning. Smal-
lies were biting. Landing them was a problem however. Landed 7 nice ones but lost
       10 to 12 others.”
   - 7-24: “We kayaked from Utica to Sugarcreek on Sunday morning. Had the same
deal as Saturday – lots of strikes but could not get them to the boat. I landed 4
good ones and Dan landed 7. Most were caught on Yum Dingers.”

Matt Watson (Franklin); filed 7-19: “I am finally finding walleye further up French Creek. I
caught six ‘eye between 17 and 22 inches tonight on the trusty Rebel Crawdad and Rebel
Cricket. They didn’t start hitting until well after dark. Also had four small smallmouth hit
before dark!”
