VENANGO COUNTY

Allegheny River
Editor’s note: The Allegheny River is extremely low and choked with uprooted floating
weeds. The floating weeds create an extreme difficult condition for fishing.

Matt Watson (Franklin); filed 9/28: “I fished the river the last three nights. It was rough
with all the weeds breaking loose. I did get a couple of nice smallmouths and four walleyes
from 18 to 20 inches in the riffles. I spooked a monster walleye last night; she was lying in
4 feet of water along the bank in an eddy. Maybe better luck tomorrow!”

Gene Winger (Oil City); filed 9/27: “I fished several days over the week of September 14th,
catching some nice smallies in three to four feet of water – but overall fishing was a little
slow. The week of September 21st didn’t seem much of an improvement. I’m guessing the
big drop in water temp the last two weeks (from the mid-80s to the low 70s) has caused
Smallie Lockjaw! Even with the fishing tough, I’ve had good luck using Winco 3.75 River
Darter Swim Baits in Amazing Dace color, as well as Solid Body River Darters.”

Pete Cartwright @ Smalliesontheyough.com; filed 9/27: “I fished the Allegheny River the
last four days near Tionesta. The fishing was good in between weeds floating down. I land-
ed a few nice 20 inch smallmouth bass using 412ubes from 412 Bait Co.; plus other fat
smallies in the 16 to 17 inch range. The water is very low and clear, with free floating
weeds making for tough conditions.” (See Livewell photos)

Angler Al (Franklin); filed 9/27:
 9/18 – “Stan Huefner boated the first cat of the night – a 28 inch flathead”
 9/26 – “Allegheny walleyes are beginning their fall forage. Near dark just above the
riffles, we used large live bait and Rapala Shad Rap #5 to catch walleyes. River
       seemed less weedy tonight.
 9/27 – “We were back at it. Managed to catch only a few smallmouth bass with live
bait prior to darkness. Stan caught a couple small white bass. We only had 1 catfish
run but the fish snagged up the line.”

Jim Simonelli (Erie); filed 9/27: “John Sheer and I have floated the Al-
legheny every week for the past month. Each week the fishing was
better than the previous week. On this past Wednesday, John got an
18” walleye on a Closuer Baby Smallmouth fly. We each caught six
smallmouths and a small pike. And I got my first tiger musky on a
fly!” (See photo to right)
