Lake Wilhelm
Corey @ Lake Wilhelm Marina; filed 9/28: “Not many anglers out on the water. We have
not received any reports of catches. The Lake Wilhelm Marina will close September 30.”

Editor’s note: Earlier in the season, reports were plentiful on good catches of walleyes at
Wilhelm, as well as some big crappies. It is hoped that the die-off of an over population
of gizzard shad may have helped improve the fishing. Bass fishing on the lake should be
peaking this fall with some of the biggest bass being caught and released in early No-
vember.

Wildlife photographer Ed Atts has been shooting pictures of waterfowl birds as he pad-
dles his canoe around the waters of NW PA. In this Report he shares information and
photos on the Great Egret photographed at Lake Wilhelm.

Ed Atts: “The great egret is an impressive all white bird that can occasionally be seen
along any of our lakes and ponds in northwestern Pennsylvania. It closely resembles the
more common great blue heron in shape and behavior, but is slightly smaller. The birds
seen in late summer and fall are migrants moving from their nesting areas in the upper
Midwest and Canada. They will eventually winter along the Atlantic Coast or as far south
as Central or South America. The great white egret with its lanky featherless black legs,
long neck and pointed yellow bill is an adaptable angler feeding on small fish, frogs and
a wide assortment of aquatic organisms. The bird does not currently nest in northwest-
ern Pennsylvania but is seen here more frequently than it was a decade ago.”
