up substantially as the water cools. And I’ve had reports of nice crappies taken on deep
structure.”

Laurie @ Duck & Drake; filed 9/28: “There has been an uptick in fishing success this past
week. I had reports of walleyes being taken by trolling Rapala Shad Raps in 16 feet of wa-
ter south of the causeway. Also some nice perch catches on minnows around the Bay 41
Area, and crappies hitting on minnows during the evening in shallow water.”

Patty @ Poff’s Place; filed 9/28: “Not a lot of anglers out so I’m
not getting much feedback. The low level of the lake may be hav-
ing some impact on number of anglers – some ramps are almost
impossible to launch at. From what I hear, it seems the fall walleye
bite is just getting started.”

                                                                                                                    Jamestown Ramp is deepest

Red @ Red’s Jigs; filed 9/27: “I’ve been averaging 20 crappies each time out in recent
weeks – all caught on my hand-tied jigs. Last week I found the crappies in 4 feet of water,
but I suspect they should be moving deeper, following structure along the points. My jigs
are available at Gateway Tackle.”

Ken Smith (Sharon); filed 9/25: “Today, 9/25, I went to Pymatuning and checked the Jame-
stown area for the early fall crappie bite. I searched shallow and deep looking for crappies.
Nothing real consistent but I did manage to put 15 crappies and a good size perch in the
livewell. Tried several different color and sizes of jigheads and bodies before I found one
they would hit. A 1/32-ounce head with a shad body was the one. My hang-glide presenta-
tion over deep brush with a ½ oz. weight above the jig to keep it down was the way to go.
On another note, I pulled my ice fishing fishfinders out and put a charge on their batteries.
The ice season will be here before you know it – so get your stuff ready!”

Conneaut Lake

Jim McClave (Andover); filed 9/18: “A very enjoyable day spent on
Conneaut Lake with Darl Black. Even though the fishing was slow,
we enjoyed the pleasant weather as fall is creeping up on us fast.
We had to work hard and explore the lake quite a bit in order to
find a few crappies right along a weedbed about 30 yards from
shore. We caught them on white/green Bobby Garland Swimming
