MERCER COUNTY

Shenango River Lake
Drew @ Five Points Country Store; filed 6/13: “Our customers have been catching some
walleyes at the lake along with channel cats. The white bass and hybrid stripers had been
hitting but now slowed somewhat; it should pick up again shortly. My tip for Father’s Day
is to take you dad fishing to Shenango Lake for crappies, bass, walleyes or catfish, but
stop by Five Points to get your bait first.”

John Kolodziejski (Mercer County); filed 6/6: “Dianne and I experienced excellent fishing

at Shenango River Lake on June 3 & 4. We landed several nice White Bass, quality Chan-

nel Catfish, a couple scrappy spawning Bluegills and a small

Northern Pike. The highlight of the weekend was locating a

large school of very active Crap- pies. Once we were on them,

the action was nonstop. We brought home 48 crappies over

9 inches. We easily caught and released the same number of

smaller Crappies, so it appears we may have another strong

age class on tap for 2017. Ad- mittedly, no big slabs were to be

found as the largest fish was 11- 1/4 inches – but that is certainly

not a complaint considering all! A 2” plastic grub on a 1/8-ounce

lead head jig worked best for Crappies, but placing and main-

taining the rig in the active zone was clearly the key.”

Jim Gronaw @ Baltimore Sun (Maryland): “In May during PA Crappie Camp, I had my
first good crappie catching day on Shenango. George Toalson, Dale Black and I caught
about 85 crappies with the bigger fish topping out at 12 inches.”

Larry Claypool @ Ohio Valley Outdoors: “I fished Shenango Lake in mid-May with Mark
McQuown of Garmin and Matt Gronaw. We were C&R fishing for
largemouth and smallmouth bass. The bite was nil the first few
hours. Finally, as it warmed up around 11 AM, we each caught
one fish while drifting in shallow water. Gronaw’s nice white bass
hit first on a Larew Biffle Bug; McQuown caught another white
bass and I caught a nice smallmouth bass on a Gene Larew
Sweet Swimmer. Around noon I switched boats to fish with
crappie pro Dan Dannenmueller and Garrett Steele in their Bob-

Larry Claypool on Shenango by Garland Crappie Bait’s wrapped boat. Their boat features a
crappie fisherman’s dream – spider rigging system. A great way

to catch a lot of fish, but Dan knows how to get onto the fish. And he can catch big crap-
