ERIE COUNTY

Presque Isle Bay
Jim @ Lake Erie Bait & Tackle; filed 5/23: “Smallmouth bass are all over the Bay. Crappie
fishing is spotty. They are catching some big walleyes casting from shore at night at the
stream mouths – a nine pounder was reported the other day.”

Pete @ Smallies of the Yough; filed 5/23: “On May 13, we hit the bay early at 6 am –
wading, by the way. We started out slow, then action picked up under terrible rain and
wind. We landed several nice largemouth and smallmouth bass, plus a few drum. All fish
were taken on 412 Baits. On May 21, it was dry when we started, but as the day went on
the wind and rain kicked in. Fishing was tough at times but we hung tough, and finished
with 23 bass. They were nice size – the biggest largemouth was 20 inches and the biggest
smallmouth was also 20 inches. All came on 412 Baits. (See our photos below)

Bob Grinarml (Cambridge Springs); filed 5/21: “I caught an unidentified fish at Presque
Isle. No one knew what it was. So I took it to the Fish Commission
office at Meadville. Their biologist identified it as a Rudd – an inva-
sive species. The Wisconsin record is 10.5 inches. This one was
16.25 inches – but no record kept in PA. I cleaned it; Rudd tastes like
cardboard. The next one I catch I’ll put under a mound of corn like
the Indians!”

                                                                                                                       Rudd

Lake Erie, Shoreline and Elk Creek
Uncle Johns Campground; filed 5/23: “We have a number of people at the campground
catching bass in Elk Creek, and even the occasional steelhead.”

Jeff @ Poor Richards; filed 5/23: “The night bite for walleye continues – both shoreline
casters and boat trollers – from 6 feet to 25 feet. The hot bait this year is Bay Rats in
glow-in-dark colors – blues, greens, purples. Also the good old Rapala Minnows. Perch
are spotty – due to the frequent blows on the lake. Perch are being caught from 28 to 60
feet – but no limit catches reported.
