NW PA FISHING REPORT for August 31, 2016
This report is brought to you by PA Great Lakes Region tourism with addi-
tional sponsorship form Wiegel Brothers marine and Gamma Fishing.
We answer the question “What’s biting in the lakes, streams, and rivers of Crawford,
Erie, Mercer and Venango counties?”
French Creek – Flowing through all four counties
Lou Letterle (Franklin); filed 8-29: My son Corey and I, and his friend
Dillon, undertook a kayak trip on French Creek before the kids went
back to school last week. Trying to escape the heat, we did more
swimming than fishing, but we did manage to catch a half dozen
smallmouth bass. The bass were caught on nose-hooked soft jerk-
baits – however all were on the small side. The highlight of the trip
was seeing three bald eagles at the same time! (Photo left)
Matt Watson (Franklin); filed 8-28: French Creek has been giving up a few nice small-
mouths in the 12 to 16 inch range. Most have come on Rebel Craws and a few on Rapala
Shallow X Raps. I am catching a few walleyes well after dark by casting a Rebel Craw and
jigging a 4-inch paddle tail or 4-inch bass tube rigged on a worm hook and stuffed with a
small piece of sponge soaked in the fat from a few crawdad heads. No weight, just bounc-
ing them on the bottom like a crawler. The fish, however, are few and far between. I’ve
been fishing the section from Cochranton to Sugar Creek. I have not been fishing the river
much; too low in my favorite spots and too hard to get to where the fish might be hiding!
CRAWFORD COUNTY
Pymatuning Lake
Norm @ Jamestown Marina; filed 8-29: It’s been so quiet on the lake that I only have two
words for you: catfish and musky. I haven’t seen walleye come through the marina dock in
sometime. But there is a lot of catfish activity, as well as some musky reports coming in.
Otherwise – quiet.
Dave @ Richter’s Bait & Tackle; filed 8-29: Hardly a boat on the lake this past week. I did-
n’t feel like fishing in the heat the other day, so I took a boat ride from the Jamestown
end to the North End of the lake; I only saw two boats. But if you are into catfish, now is
