patterns. I will switch colors and downsize from a 1/2-ounce to a 1/4-ounce Rippin’ Rap
once I educated the school in order to get a few more bites.
I choose 10 or 12-pound fluorocarbon, a 7’1” M 13 Fishing moderate action rod and a high
speed Concept Reel for this presentation. I make long casts,
hold the rod tip high at 45 de- grees and try to keep the bait vibra-
tion just barely above the grass. When I feel the bait bogging
down a little with vegetation strands, I give a quick, hard slack
line snap and continue reeling as long – as I can feel the bait vi-
brating. When it bogs down again, I repeat – maybe a million
times in a cast, lol.
One thing I see guys do wrong this time of year is keep on moving
after getting a bite or catching a fish. The most important thing is
to toss a buoy marker immedi- ately and look at the horizon for
something to line up your next cast. There is NEVER just one bass
there but a group of bass. But they are easy to miss unless you hit the right spot again. We
have caught 100 or more bass from a spot the size of my boat – but casting too far to the
left or right will yield nothing. Use our buoy markers!
This is one of my favorite ways to catch bass this time of year. Thankfully I was able to get
out on Presque Isle Bay last weekend before the weather turned nasty and caught 15 bass
doing this…felt good!
