Fishing April prespawn bass in rivers can be tough sometimes due
to flow conditions, but it also can be some of the best smallie
fishing of the year. Rising or falling water levels can cause smallies
to turn on or off. Changing temperature has the same impact –
drop in temp usually shuts the fish down. When the water is high
and stained, I use soft plastic baits that give off more vibrations

than my favorite tube jig. For stained water, my bait choice is a
412 Small Jaw Craw on a skirted jig. Besides providing more ac-
tion than a tube, you can chose to swim it, drag it or bounce it.
Given the possible retrieves, when you combine this bait with su-
per strong and super abrasion resistant 8-pound Gamma Edge
