ing in Louisiana. But he didn’t travel South without his fishing rod
and Gamma Line. Here is his Gamma Tip : “I was observing up to ten anglers all making
long casts from the side of the road to a small current race pouring from a culvert along
Highway 1. There is fishable water at many points as the highway cuts through hundreds
of square miles of tidal marsh that make up the south Louisiana coast. We were fishing
for speckled sea trout, flounder and my favorite – redfish. I refer to redfish as the small-
mouth bass of salt marshes – tremendous fighters making powerful runs! These anglers
were catching numbers of undersized 12 to 15-inch redfish with an occasional 16-inch
keeper. I noticed everybody was using 20 to 50-pound line and two-hook bait rig held in
the current with a 1 to 2-ounce sinker. I knew in my bones there had to be some good
ones in the mix, but the keeper fish must be shying away from the usual presentation –
so I threw them a curve. I grabbed my spinning rod spooled with 6-pound Gamma
Torque Braid, tied on a 3/16 ounce shaky jighead and threaded a Gene Larew Long John
Minnow on the hook. My bait was heavy enough to reach the far side of the current but
light enough to retrieve above all the bottom rigs. My first cast was rewarded with a 26-
inch redfish and an exhilarating fight. Eight casts later I had my 5 fish limit ranging from
22 inches to 29 inches, with the biggest weighing in at 9 pounds. I can’t wait to apply this
strategy on the walleye population in Pymatuning Lake this summer when I hear ‘We are
catching a lot fish, but they are all just a little short!’ “
