HIT THE TAILOUTS FOR MID FALL RIVER SMALLIES AND WALLEYES

By Jeff Knapp/Keystone Connection Guide Service

The tail-out section of middle Allegheny pools -- where the deep/slow water transitions
into a shallower, faster chute before spilling into a riffle -- is a prime spot for early to mid-
fall smallmouth and walleyes.

Tail-outs provide gamefish with edges. Edges in the form of current seams created by
depth change (which influences current velocity); submerged rocks and weed beds; logs
imbedded in the bottom. A myriad of characteristics -- and combinations thereof -- all of
which are potential feeding lies for ambush predators.

Since tail-outs often hold numerous fish, and the ones found there are likely feeding, it
makes sense to work the spot methodically, rather than firing a few casts as you swiftly
drift through it.

Begin by anchoring the boat at least a cast’s length upriver of the start of the tail-out. I
use a Minn Kota Deckhand 40 to efficiently lower and raise the anchor, something that
can happen at multiple locations within a large tail-out. (Continued next page)
