I spool my reels with braid and tie on a three to five-
foot leader of Gamma Edge in either 10 or 12-pound
                                             test.

Make casts perpendicular to the boat’s position, or
just slightly upriver. The current will sweep the lure/
bait downstream during your retrieve, an integral
part of this presentation. I like to start off with a Ra-
pala X-Rap, imparting jerks/twitches to the lure as it
swings in the current. Another good choice is a soft
jerkbait, in which case I use a Solid Body River Darter
from Winco’s Custom Lures. With both, when the
lure is immediately downstream of the boat, allow it to hang in the current for a few mo-
ments, while continuing to twitch it, prior to winding in for the next cast. Most hits will
happen during the swing, but some will occur while you allow the lure to hover behind the
boat.

After showing the fish a minnow-imitating bait, you can often pick up a few more bites by
switching to a bottom-oriented offering like a jig or crankbait. Repositioning the boat –
such as allowing it to drift farther back in the tail-out before re-anchoring – can put you in
front of a whole different group of fish.
