Steelhead Line Tip from Dale Black, President of Gamma Line:

Several of our Gamma pro-staff anglers use the following line and leader combination for
steelhead fishing. First, they spool their spinning reel with six or eight-pound test Gamma
Optic Yellow Panfish Polyflex line – an extremely manageable and very castable line. Then
using their favorite line-to-line knot, they attached a three to five-foot leader of six-
pound Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon Line. This offers the best combination for steelhead
fishing. Since Polyflex line (monofilament) floats, the Optic Yellow color acts as a bite de-
tector. However the fluorocarbon leader sinks, thereby getting your presentation (single
egg, skein, minnow, worm, Powerbait or whatever you use) into the fish zone near the
bottom. The length of the leader is based mainly upon the depth of water targeted –
shallower runs, use a shorter leader; deeper holes use a longer leader. Due to special pro-
cessing , Gamma Polyflex and Fluorocarbon Lines are incredibly strong for their diameter.
Under really tough bite conditions of low clear water and heavy fishing pressure, don’t
hesitate to drop down to a 4-pound-test Edge Fluorocarbon leader – our line will get the
job done.
