With half a century of fishing under my belt, I concluded that September is my least favor-
ite month of the open water season. Once again, September 2016 was as sour as ever. Alt-
hough select panfish bites may have eased the pain somewhat, this September’s down-
turn in contributors’ reports along with lack of exciting catch reports
from many tackle shops certainly backs up the hypnosis that this
month is extremely tough for anglers. The good news…September is
over! Lakes are finally starting to cool down from record summer
high temps, thereby triggering crappies, bass, walleyes, pike and
more to begin the fall feeding. Steelheads are waiting to move up
the Erie tributaries with the first good rain – which may happen this
week. Don’t put those rods away yet!
