September is a transition month. Summer is ending but fall isn’t in full spring. This year it
seems that both fish and anglers are tired of the sun, heat and warm water temps. Every-
one is waiting for a cool down. Fish activity for more popular species
on inland waters is at a season low for the most part. Bluegills, white
bass and catfish seem to be the best bites in lakes, although it looks
like crappies may be starting to make the fall swing on Pymatuning.
The Allegheny River is cooling quicker than lakes, so look for im-
proved smallmouth fishing by end of the month. Perch fishing ap-
pears strong on Erie, at least for a short while longer. But when steel-
heads move in the steams, almost everyone will be beating a path to
the Erie tributaries.
