September has been my least favorite month
for fishing in Northwest PA. Changes in
weather from the fairly constant patterns of
summer to unpredictable early fall weather
and hurricane influences throw things into a
tizzy. Northern winds and storms on Erie in-
crease during September; steelhead are just
thinking about running but don’t get real seri-
ous about it The upper Allegheny is often
filled with floating vegetation making jet
boating difficult and working lures frustrating.
Furthermore, dramatic unseasonable late
summer heating when water should be cool-
ing conflicts fish species that already in tran-
sition. Through it all, anglers do what they
can to catch fish. As witnessed in this issue,
some are successful. But others simply give
up, waiting for the true fall cool down and a
