The Landing Net by Darl Black

This has become very hot, dry summer. Only the most hardy (or most fool-hardy) have
been out this past week. I’ve been sitting it out waiting for a temp break – which should
come by the weekend. With this hot weather comes a shift in fishing. Right now Lake Erie
is a great place to be for walleyes, smallmouth and an improving
perch bite. On inland waters, French Creek and the Allegheny River is
the place for walleyes and smallmouth; flowing water is always
better in midsummer. On our shallower lakes (like Pymatuning, Wil-
helm and Shenango) fish-catching slows – except for channel cats.
However, by switching lakes, you can find some great crappie, blue-
gill and bass fishing. For example, deepwater Conneaut Lake is Mari-
lyn’s favorite summer lake – but only during weekdays!
